Cross Country teams prepare for SoCon Championship

LEXINGTON, Va. – After months of competition and training, the VMI cross country teams are prepared to compete at the 2024 Southern Conference Championship races this Saturday in Greenville, South Carolina.

Hosted by Furman University, the championship races will take place at Furman Golf Course. The men will run an 8K Course at 10 a.m. followed by the women's 5K race at 10:45.

"Anticipation is high for a strong showing against our conference rivals. This championship meet marks the culmination of months of dedicated training and competition, offering our athletes the opportunity to showcase their grit, strategy, and teamwork.

"This event presents a unique test for both the men's and women's teams, with the men set to compete in only their second 8K of the season and the women tackling their first and only 5K after a schedule focused heavily on 6K races. Adapting to these distances will test both squads' endurance and racing strategies as they strive for success in this critical postseason competition.

"With a roster of determined athletes ready to take on the best in the conference, VMI is set for a competitive and spirited championship meet."

Last Time Out
Sophomore Kevin Shank led the team in 91st place overall with a personal-best time of 25:05.1 at the UVA Panorama Farms Invitational, topping his previous personal best by 11 seconds. Teammate Patrick Lowry finished second for the Keydets in 145th place overall in 25:56.2, just missing his PR by three seconds.

On the women's side, sophomore Jillian Sisk earned a personal record time of 22:04.0, beating her previous best 6K mark by 35 seconds to place 48th overall. Senior Gretal Shank finished second for VMI with a time of 23:46.2, one of her top three marks all-time and a season-best 6K mark.
