VMI concludes regular season with pair of home games

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI women's soccer team concludes the 2024 regular season this weekend with a pair of home matches ahead of next week's Southern Conference tournament.
 
The Keydets (5-9-2, 1-6-1) step out of conference play for a quick match with South Carolina State Friday afternoon before jumping back into league action with a game versus ETSU Sunday.

The Keydets will learn their SoCon Tournament opponent and location Sunday evening following the match with ETSU.  

Last Time Out
The Keydets fell by a 3-1 score to visiting UT Chattanooga Sunday afternoon on VMI's Senior Day.
VMI's Riley Boucher scored in the second minute of the match to put VMI up early, but the Mocs rebounded with two first half goals, including one just two seconds before halftime.  Chattanooga added one more tally in the second half to secure the league victory.
 
About the SC State Bulldogs (1-13)
The Bulldogs opened the season with 12 straight losses before earning a 1-0 win over South Carolina-Beaufort on October 2 on the road. SC State took a break for two weeks before facing Gardner-Webb October 18 in a hard-fought 2-0 loss. Their matchup at Coker College Wednesday night was canceled.
 
SC State has tallied four goals on the season, including two by Daijah White. Kayla Moses and Shannilea Schliffer contributed the other two goals. White and Moses both lead the squad with nine shot attempts apiece on the year.
 
Jada Gittings has seen the most time in the net with over 1,000 minutes as the leading goalie. She has tallied 73 saves on the season for a .640 save percentage.
 
About the ETSU Bucs (3-7-4, 2-3-3)
After opening the season with a 1-4-1 mark, including a loss at Duke, the Bucs opened conference play with a strong statement by topping The Citadel by a 6-0 score. Going back and forth between and win and loss columns throughout SoCon action, ETSU then tied UNCG by a 1-1 score before falling to Mercer to close the month of September. The Bucs picked up a win over Wofford sandwiched between losses to Chattanooga and Furman.
 
ETSU is coming off two consecutive league ties against strong conference opponents Western Carolina and most recently a 2-2 draw versus Samford at home this past Sunday.
 
Grace Eatz leads the team with four goals on the season while Reagan Fitzgerald, Kyra Ranvek and Ruby Teixeira all have two. Fitzgerald, Natalie Capannelli, Sadie Commerford and Georgia Shields lead the Bucs with two helpers apiece.
 
Ashton Blair has played all 1250 minutes for the year and allowed 19 goals for a 1.37 goals-against average to go with 67 saves.
