VMI to face Western Carolina at home

LEXINGTON, Va. – Following VMI's big win over The Citadel last week in Charleston, the VMI women's soccer team returns to Lexington to continue SoCon play against preseason favorite Western Carolina Thursday at 4 p.m. at Patchin Field.

The Keydets (5-5-1, 1-2) are coming off a huge 2-1 win over rival The Citadel last Thursday, a game in which VMI trailed 1-0 at the half but rallied for two second-half goals to earn the come-from-behind win on a wet and windy WLI Field in Charleston, South Carolina.
 
Senior Delilah Martindale scored her first career goal as a Keydet to earn the equalizer early in the second stanza before sophomore Barrett Callejo kicked in a game-winning PK later in the half to lift the Keydets to victory.
 
The win marked VMI's second straight win over the Bulldogs in comeback fashion, and was significant in that it was also the first time since the 2016-17 campaigns that VMI had defeated The Citadel in consecutive years. The conference win was VMI's first of the season.
 
About the Catamounts (7-2-2, 2-0)
Western Carolina has not been able to play since a date with Mercer on September 22 as their game scheduled at Furman last weekend was postponed due to the effects of Hurricane Helene.
 
After opening the season 1-2, the Catamounts have not lost a match since a 2-1 loss to Queens back on August 22. With two ties in between, Western Carolina has won six consecutive contests including wins over Georgia State, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian and Winthrop in addition to league foes Samford and Mercer.
 
Milla Syska leads the team with eight goals on the year while Naya Marcil and Kirsten Hahn both have four. Becca Campbell is also among the scoring leaders with three on the year. Isabella DeMarco is the key distributor with four assists in 2024.
 
Leanne Trudel has played all but 12 minutes in the goalbox this season and has allowed just seven goals in nearly 1,000 minutes of play. She owns a 0.64 goals-against average – including six shutouts - to go with 37 saves and a .841 save percentage.
