Keydets face Gardner-Webb Thursday, host LIU Sunday

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking to bounce back from a hard-fought loss to USC Upstate this past weekend, the VMI women's soccer team travels to Gardner-Webb for a Thursday night matchup before hosting Long Island Sunday at 1 p.m. at Drill Field #2.

Sunday's match with LIU will also serve as Senior Day for six cadet-athletes including Morgan Anderson, Katie Orndorff, Madison Hornig, Hannah White, Grace Wagner and Jillian Hall.
 
The Keydets scored two goals against USC Upstate on Sunday, tying the game on both instances before the Spartans pulled away with two second-half goals for the 4-2 win. Although she was not credited due to an Upstate own goal, VMI freshman Barrett Callejo kicked in a goal early in the opening half, and sophomore defender Caroline Marini headed in a free kick early in the second half to knot the score at 2-2. Marini's goal marked a career first for the Southlake, Texas, native after she logged one assist in 2022.
 
Senior goalie Jillian Hall is just 11 saves away from becoming VMI's all-time saves leader. Currently at 286 for her career, she will pass Jessica Rheinlander's 2004-06 mark of 296 saves as the all-time saves leader for the program.
 
About Gardner-Webb (1-5)
Opening the season with losses to Davidson and #25 Clemson, the Bulldogs bounced back with a dominating 8-0 victory over Allen University on August 25 for their first win of the season. GWU then fell to SoCon foe ETSU by a 3-0 score on Aug. 27 before taking a hard-fought 4-0 loss to #4 North Carolina Aug. 31 and a 3-0 loss to Marshall this past Sunday.
 
Gardner-Webb is led by Carina Leal and Lina Ullen, who both have two scores on the season to go with one assist for five points apiece. Livi Tanzer, Kegan Gettys, Julianna Jatkola and Klara Ovefelt each have one goal for the year.
 
Goalie Jamie Martin has seen the most time in the box with four complete games to her credit as she has accounted for 32 saves and .627 save percentage. Savannah Dixon, Stephanie Liu and Andrea Stampone have all played minutes this season.
 
About LIU (2-2-1)
VMI and LIU played to a 2-2 draw last season at LIU in Brookville, New York.
 
The Sharks opened the season 2-0 with wins over Saint Peter's and Rider before taking a close 1-0 loss to UMBC and a 3-0 loss at NJIT a few days later. Most recently, LIU is coming off a 0-0 scoreless draw with Manhattan this past Sunday on the road.
 
LIU's four goals on the season have all been scored by separate athletes including Noa Bartels van Bosbeek, Gina Proviano, Stephanie Schubert and Matiana Valdez. Bartels van Bosbeek leads the team with 11 shot attempts on the year while Proviano and Betty Hall each have seven.
 
In the box, Keely Thomas has played all 450 minutes on the season and has 17 saves saves and a .810 save percentage to her credit having faced 51 shots. She has logged three shutouts early in the season.
