Keydets face Longwood and Liberty at home this week

LEXINGTON, Va. – Hoping to bounce back from two close losses last week, the VMI women's soccer team will face Longwood University Thursday and Liberty University on Sunday in two home matches this weekend at Drill Field #2.

VMI (1-6, 0-0) scored first in its game versus LIU this past Sunday to jump ahead early in the match, but the Sharks equaled the scored at 1-1 moments later on a penalty kick. Both teams went shot-for-shot in the second half, but LIU escaped with a win in the final minutes when Noa Bartels van Bosbeek scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute (86:05) by taking a cross from Gina Proviano and sneaking it into the VMI goal.
 
About the Longwood Lancers (1-4-2)
Facing a challenging schedule, the Lancers earned an impressive 1-0 win at UMBC earlier this season and achieved ties with both Elon and American. Longwood also has close losses to Liberty by a 2-1 score and a 1-0 setback to Howard.
 
The Lancers have scored three goals on the year, one each by Peyton Curney, Julia Gill and Emma Jones, with Brooke Bonner accounting for one assist. Gill leads the squad with 12 shots and Karleigh Minson is close behind with 11.
 
Goalie Mary Kate Levush has played all but 22 minutes on the season, owns a 1.04 GAA and has 34 saves and .829 save percentage. She has also recorded three shutouts through seven matches.
 
About the (RV) Liberty Flames (7-0)
Receiving votes for the Top 25 national poll, Liberty owns a perfect 7-0 record on the year with prominent wins over VCU, Delaware, UNC Wilmington, Longwood, West Virginia and Marshall. Liberty has a showdown with App State Thursday night prior to Sunday's matchup with VMI at Drill Field #2.
 
The Flames have outscored opponents 15-3 on the year and outshot opponents by a 107-33 tally. Ivy Garner, Rachel DeRuby and Allison Hansford lead the team with three goals apiece for the year, while Saydie Holland and Ava Goodman both have two. DeRuby leads the squad with 20 shot attempts thus far, and Garner and Chloe Marr lead the way with two assists each.
 
Goalie Ainsley Leja has accounted for all 630 minutes in the box, allowed three goals and has four shutouts to go with a 0.43 GAA and .786 save percentage.
