Keydets to face Delaware State, Winthrop this week

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking to bounce back from losses to Robert Morris and UNC Asheville, the VMI women's soccer team travels to Delaware State Thursday before facing Winthrop at home Saturday afternoon.
 
Kickoff at Delaware State will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Dover, Delaware, before taking on Winthrop Saturday at 4 p.m. on Drill Field #2 in Lexington.

While held scoreless in the two matches last week, VMI came close on several scoring opportunities in both games.
 
Against Asheville, the Keydets won the shot battle by a 15-12 count as the teams traded seven shots apiece in the first half. VMI also battled in the second half, but a late Bulldog score with 15 minutes to play lifted the visitors to victory last Sunday at Drill Field #2.
 
 
About Delaware State
VMI has claimed the last two games over the Hornets, beating Delaware State by a 4-0 score at home in 2018 and a 4-0 victory on the road in 2019. VMI leads the all-time series by a 3-1-2 count.
 
The Hornets are off to an 0-2 start to the season after taking losses last week to George Washington by a 7-0 score and a 3-0 loss at home to Charleston Southern.
 
Also held scoreless through two matches, the Hornets are led by Nicole Cargill, Kaylen Goddard and Ahsia Thomas, who all have two shot attempts thus far. Seven others have tallied one shot attempts early in the season.
 
Ashley Maribo has played all 180 minutes in the box, totaling 22 saves for a .688 save percentage having faced 52 shot attempts.
 
 
About Winthrop
The Eagles lead the all-time series with VMI with nine wins to VMI's five to go with one tie. Most recently, VMI won in overtime in 2021 by a 1-0 score at home before falling on the road to the Eagles by a 3-1 count in 2022.
 
The Eagles have played just one regular season game so far, earning a 1-1 tie with Southern Conference foe The Citadel by a 1-1 score this past Sunday.  Sophia Balliet scored the lone goal for the Eagles against the Bulldogs, knotting the game at 1-1 with just 1:25 left in regulation.
 
Annabel Thomas leads the Eagles with four shot attempts through 90 minutes of play while Monssi Avila-Gutierrez is second with three. Balliet, Marianella Gillum and Abbie McCrea each have one shot attempt so far.
 
Goalie Izzy Giarrizzi logged three saves against The Citadel on Sunday facing 10 shots to help preserve a tie.
