VMI continues league play against Furman and Western Carolina

LEXINGTON, Va. – Coming off a pair of losses to Southern Conference opponents last week, the VMI women's soccer team looks to steer the ship in the direction of a second league win this season as the Keydets face Furman Thursday afternoon at home before traveling to Western Carolina for a game Sunday at noon.
 
The Keydets (2-13, 1-5) will play on Patchin Field for the first time this season when they face the Paladins. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon. VMI then departs for Cullowhee, North Carolina, to face the Catamounts Sunday for another SoCon road contest.

About the Paladins (5-4-5, 1-1-4)
Furman is coming off a close 1-0 loss to UNCG after three straight ties with SoCon foes The Citadel, Chattanooga and Samford. The Paladins opened league play with a scoreless draw with ETSU and 2-1 win over Western Carolina, and opened the season with three straight wins over Presbyterian, Georgia Southern and North Greenville.
 
Valentina Mosquera leads the team with five goals on the year while Norah Roller and Shania Diaz have three and two, respectively. The offense has been widespread among the forwards and midfielders as seven different Paladins have logged one goal apiece this season.
 
Addison Corn has played all but nine minutes this season in the goalbox, allowing 15 goals for a 1.08 goals-against average to go with 72 saves on the year. She has also tallied three shutouts in 2023.
 
About the Catamounts (8-3-3, 5-1)
Western Carolina has allowed only one goal over the past four games as the Catmounts are coming off four straight SoCon wins over UNCG (4-0), Wofford (5-0), Chattanooga (2-0) and a 2-1 win over Mercer. Western plays at The Citadel Thursday night prior to the matchup with VMI Sunday.
 
Naya Marcil leads the team with 25 points on the season between eight goals and nine assists. Isabella DeMarco has earned a team-high nine goals to go with four assists, while Milla Syska, Maggie Lloyd and Abbie Lainhart each have two goals.
 
Goalie Leanne Trudel has played all but 63 minutes in the box this season and has allowed just 13 goals for a 0.98 GAA and .787 save percentage. She has also posted six shutouts during the 2023 campaign.
