Keydets Host SoCon Opener and Senior Day this Weekend

LEXINGTON, Va. – Coming off a tie last weekend against USC Upstate, the VMI women's soccer team continues its five-game homestand with two matches this weekend against UNCG and South Carolina State.
 
Friday's 4 p.m. kick off with UNCG at Patchin Field marks the Southern Conference opener for both schools as the Keydets (0-7-2) look to open league play with a victory. VMI then steps out of conference action for a matchup with SC State Sunday at 1 p.m., which is also the designated Senior Day game for the Keydets.
 
Before Sunday's game, VMI seniors Abi Dent, Anissa Cheikh and Kaitlyn Tippie will be recognized for a Senior Day presentation at approximately 12:10 p.m. at Patchin Field.

LAST TIME ON THE PITCH 
The Keydets (0-7-2) earned a 1-1 tie with visiting USC Upstate last Saturday at Patchin Field. VMI's Sedona Dancu put the Keydets on top early with a goal in the 20th minute before Upstate's Alaina McKnight  knotted the game at one apiece early in the second half.
 
THE UNCG SPARTANS (3-4-1, 0-0)
UNCG looks to rebound Friday after coming off two consecutive losses last week at the hands of UNC Wilmington and Elon. The Spartans opened the season with a win over Charlotte before falling to #2 Duke by a close 3-1 tally. They also have a 1-0 win over Liberty and a 1-1 tie with VCU on their resume thus far in 2022. Maddy Gilhool leads the team with four goals on the season while Hannah Morton and Ryen Ortiz both have two.
 
THE SC STATE BULLDOGS  (0-12, 0-0 MEAC)
The Bulldogs look to earn their first victory of the season after coming up short to this point of the season, most recently a 9-0 loss at the hands of instate foe The Citadel. Simone Miranda and Kayla Moses lead the team with one goal apiece on the year.

KEYDETS vs. SPARTANS
The two schools have faced off a total of nine times, with the Spartans holding an 8-1 all-time series advantage. The Spartans took the 2021 contest by a 2-1 score.
 
KEYDETS vs. BULLDOGS
VMI owns a commanding 8-0-1 all-time series lead against the Bulldogs. Last season, the Keydets registered a 6-0 victory in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
