VMI to Face The Citadel in SoCon Tournament First Round

The tournament begins Tuesday with a pair of first-round matches on campus sites

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The VMI women's soccer team discovered Sunday night it would not have to travel far for the 2022 SoCon Tournament as the No. 10 seed Keydets will stay in Charleston, South Carolina, to face No. 7 The Citadel Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at WLI Field.
 
The Keydets are just a few hours removed from facing the Bulldogs as The Citadel took a 5-1 victory over VMI Sunday afternoon at the same premises.
 
VMI will look to reverse its fortunes in the first round Tuesday as the winner will advance to face No. 2 seed Samford Friday. The Samford Bulldogs shared the regular season title with Chattanooga as both teams own a 5-1-3 mark, but Chattanooga earned the No. 1 seed by defeating Mercer on September 23. The Mocs and Bulldogs played to a 1-1 tie on October 7.
 
The tournament begins Tuesday, Oct. 25, with a pair of first-round matches on campus sites. The quarterfinal round follows on Oct. 28 with the semifinal round set for Oct. 30, both hosted by top-seed Chattanooga and No. 2 seed Samford. The championship will be played at the highest remaining seed on Nov. 5 or 6.
 
The tournament winner earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
