Keydets Open Winter Relays with Successful Marks

LEXINGTON, Va. – In its third home meet of the indoor season, the VMI track and field teams opened the VMI Winter Relays with much success Friday evening at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
 
Senior Gavin Jenkins showed well in the 5,000 meter by placing first overall with a time of 14:40.89.
 
In the 60 meter preliminaries, senior Jordin Poindexter came in first overall in 6.83 seconds to advance to the semifinals for the event, which he placed second overall in 6.81 seconds. He will compete in the final round of the event Saturday morning at 11:15 a.m. Freshman Jeremiah Wilks competed in the prelims and arrived in 16th in 7.10 seconds while Nick Brown finished 22nd overall in 7.17 seconds.
 
Sophomore Keyandre Midgett placed fourth overall in 8.55 seconds in the 60m hurdles while freshman Xander Topos logged a 10th-place finish in 8.77 seconds. Midgett later placed seventh in the triple jump at a distance of 13.54 meters.
 
Freshman Richard Edwards led the way for VMI in the 400-meter dash with a second-place finish in 50.02 seconds just ahead of senior Johnnie Walker's fourth-place mark in 50.08. Noah Schagelin placed 15th overall in 52.02 seconds and Rafael Mas came in 16th in 52.04.
 
"We had another meet with personal best performances throughout the team with a field of 48 schools," said VMI Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Zack Scott. "Jordin Poindexter continues his campaign in the sprints by qualifying in the 60m dash finals Saturday. Richard Edwards finished second and Johnnie Walker in fourth shows they competed well in the 400m well as they run faster each meet to get ready for the Southern Conference Championships."
 
The VMI A team of D. Alex Fiorillo, Trent Whittaker, Andre Jordan and Zach Lauster finished first overall in the 4x800 event in 7:46.78 and the B team consisting of Ian Irizarry-Negron, Craig Swain, Andrew Hirneisen and Brian Tavenner finished fourth in 8:21.92.  
 
Several athletes competed in the heptathlon including Kevin Linko, who ranks third after four of the seven events with 2212 points. He earned a 7.53 in the 60m, a 5.79m long jump, a 9.76 shot put and a 1.64m in the high jump.
 
Stephen Munson is in fifth overall with 2166 points. He finished the 60m in 7.70 seconds and logged a 6.15m long jump, 11.90m shot put and 1.37m high jump. Hunter Reed is also competing and ranks sixth with 2034 points with three events to go. He registered a 7.79 in the 60 meter, a 5.53m long jump, 9.05m shot put and a 1.64m high jump.
 
Herbert Brooks finished in ninth in the weight throw with a top distance of 15.25 meters while sophomore Andrew Granger came in 10th at 14.26 meters.
 
The Keydets return to action Saturday morning with Day Two of the VMI Winter Relays at the CPTF.
