Men's Track and Field

Keydets Impressive in Season-Opening VMI Team Challenge

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI men's track and field team started the 2022 indoor season in impressive fashion with multiple first-place finishes and personal bests at Saturday's VMI Team Challenge at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
 
Senior sprinter Jordin Poindexter finished first in the 60-meter preliminaries with a personal-best 6.80 seconds, the second-best mark in school history. Freshman Jeremiah Wilks placed third in the prelims with a time of 7.08 seconds. Poindexter would go on to take first in the 60m finals in 6.81 seconds and Wilks improved to second place in 7.06 seconds.
 
Poindexter and Wilks continued to dominate in the 200-meter dash by taking first and second, respectively, in 21.78 seconds and 22.10 seconds.
 
"This was a great meet for our team to start off our season," said VMI Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Zack Scott. "We had a personal best in almost every event thanks to our incredible coaching staff. We maximized a week of training two times a day.  The team has set a new standard for our program as we prepare for the conference championships."
 
Sophomore Keyandre Midgett placed first in the 60m hurdles prelims and finals, earning an 8.35 in the prelims and a 8.38 in the finals. Freshman Xander Topos came in seventh in the prelims at 8.70 seconds and improved to sixth place in the finals in 8.71 seconds.
 
Midgett also showed well in the long jump by placing first with a distance of 6.80 meters just beyond freshman Charles Male's second-place mark of 6.53 meters.
 
In the weight throw, Herbert Brooks placed second with a 15.76-meter throw and Andrew Granger logged a fourth-place distance of 15.44 meters. In the shot put, Solomon Ghosh came in fourth with a distance of 13.54 meters and Brooks was close behind in fifth at 12.67 meters.
 
Stephen Munson placed third in the pole vault with a height of 4.20 meters and Hunter Reed came in fifth with a mark of 3.90 meters.
 
Senior Gavin Jenkins logged a second-place time of 4:18.10 in the mile run and was pursued closely by Whittaker and Zach Lauster, who arrived in fourth (4:18.80) and fifth (4:19.25), respectively. Jenkins later earned a ninth-place time of 8:58.37 in the 3000-meter run.
 
In the triple jump, Charles Male started his freshman campaign well with a second-place distance of 13.11 meters.
 
Noah Schagelin registered a fifth-place mark of 53.21 seconds in the 400-meter.
 
The 4x400 VMI A team of Topos, Johnnie Walker, Whittaker, and Zach Lauster showed well by placing first in 3:24.43 while the VMI B grouping of Schagelin, Andre Jordan, Adam Waite and Ian Irizarry-Negron placed fourth in 3:35.91.
 
The Keydets return to action next weekend hosting the Keydet Invitational Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21-22, at the CPTF.
