About the Pirates (0-1-0)

East Carolina also started its 2021 season Thursday night and fell in overtime to Old Dominion by a close 2-1 score. In two exhibition matches, the Pirates defeated Longwood by a 2-0 score on Aug. 10 and followed it up with a 3-0 victory over UNC Wilmington on Aug. 14.

Against Old Dominion, the game was tied at 1-1 at the half and neither time could find the back of the net in the second half. In the OT period, ODU's Emma Gervase took a pass from Ece Turkoglu in the 96th minute and snuck it in to win the game for the Monarchs and send the Pirates back home with a loss.

Trailing by a 1-0 score just 39 seconds into the game, ECU's Peyton Godbey took a cross from Carsen Parker and shot it in for the equalizer at the 5:40 mark of the opening half.

The Keydets and Pirates have faced each other just once, with ECU earning a 3-0 win two years ago on September 8, 2019, at Patchin Field.
