Keydets Solid in Final Tune-ups Before SoCon Meet

LEXINGTON, Va. – With the SoCon Outdoor Championships a week away, the VMI track and field teams performed well at the Aggie Classic in Greensboro, North Carolina, and the W&L Spring Kick-Off in Lexington.
 
In Greensboro, freshman Keyandre Midgett highlighted the day for VMI by placing third in the triple jump at 14.19 meters, which is the second-best mark in the SoCon this spring. Later on in the 100Mh, he placed seventh in the preliminaries in 15.13 seconds before finishing third in the finals in 15.06, the seventh best mark in the SoCon this season. Fellow freshman Liam McBride came in eighth in the preliminaries in 15.16 – eighth best mark in the SoCon -  before taking fourth in the finals in 15.76 seconds.
 
Jayden Napier placed fourth in the high jump at 1.70 meters, and the men's 4x100 relay squad of Bret Trahan, Jonathan Gray, Midgett and Jordin Poindexter arrived in fourth overall in 42.25 seconds, the third best mark in the SoCon this season.
 
"At N.C. A&T, like most of the Mid-Atlantic region it was cold and raining, and with the upcoming conference championship we were pretty conservative with the weather. But it was good to get the stick around cleanly in the men's 4x1, and Keyandre was able to triple jump for the first time this outdoor and put himself right where he needs to be for next weekend. In addition, I thought those in the sprints/hurdles ran well in tough conditions."

The Keydets had multiple first-place finishes at the Washington & Lee meet and excellent marks in the Southern Conference individual standings.
 
Trent Whittaker came in first in the men's mile run in 4:09.53, which converted to the 1500m is the 10th best time in the SoCon in 3:51.04. Gavin Jenkins placed second in 4:11.39 and Zach Lauster came in fourth in 4:17.69.
 
In the men's javelin, Ty Wesenyak placed first with a distance of 51.64 meters, third-best mark in the league. Teammate Ty Hevener was close behind with a mark of 46.66 meters, the 7th best distance in the SoCon.  
 
For the men's shot put, Solomon Ghosh threw a distance of 14.14 meters to place first, the sixth best distance in the conference. Teammate Herbert Brooks place second at 12.33 meters. In the women's shot, Sarah Leckman placed first at 13.45m and teammate Ellie Miller came in second at 11.56 meters, the 10th best mark in the league.
 
Freshman Andrew Granger came in first in the men's hammer with a distance of 54.21 meters, the second best distance in the SoCon. Brooks again placed second for the event at 35.31m.

"At the Washington and Lee meet as a whole it looked like some really good results on the track (running good times and winning multiple events). However, I was very impressed with the marks of the throwers for both the men and women across the board.  A very good job for Coach Scott and the group of throwers this weekend.  It sure looks like they will be ready to go next weekend, along with the rest of the team."
 
Anna Armfield won the women's 3,000-meter in 11:02.04 and was pursued closely by Sara Belamarich, who came in second in 11:18.65.
 
Stephanie Jones won the women's hammer competition with a mark of 44.39 meters, while Sarah Leckman placed third at 41.20 meters.
 
The men's 4x400 grouping of Noah Schagelin, Dylan Haines, Zach Lauster and Trent Whittaker placed first with a time of 3:27.84.
