Shahbaz Qualifies for NCAA XC Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – Following a stellar cross country season this past fall, VMI senior Jahanzib Shahbaz has been selected to compete as an at-large individual at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships as announced today by the Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee.
 
The meet will take place Monday, March 15 at the OSU Cross Country Course hosted by Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in each championship, and 38 individuals were selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. Furman is the lone school representing the Southern Conference.
 
"It is an exciting moment and opportunity for Jahanzib and VMI," said VMI Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Darrin Webb. "He is excited to go to OSU and represent himself and VMI. Shahbaz has continuously been focused and worked hard, day in and day out, to earn a selection to the NCAA Championships.  I know he is excited and will take advantage of the opportunity provided to him."
 
At the SoCon Cross Country Championships this past November in Macon, Georgia, Shahbaz placed second individually with an 8k time of 24:23.74 to earn First Team All-SoCon honors for the second straight year.  He helped the Keydets to 63 points, its best score since rejoining the SoCon in 2014.
 
"Jahanzib has worked hard to get a chance to represent VMI," said VMI head cross country coach Dr. Drew Ludtke. "I am proud of his hard work and achievements. The entire team is excited to have Jahanzib compete next Monday!"
 
NCAA cross country fans will have the opportunity to watch live coverage of the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on ESPNU or the ESPN App. Live coverage of the NCAA Championships will be available starting at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time. The women's race will begin at 12:50 p.m. Eastern Time, followed by the men's race at 1:40 p.m. Eastern Time.
