Keydets Host The Citadel, Mercer in Return to Patchin

LEXINGTON, Va. – After playing on the road the past five weeks, the VMI women's soccer team makes its long-awaited return to Patchin Field to resume Southern Conference action this weekend against The Citadel and Mercer.
 
VMI faces rival The Citadel Friday at 4 p.m. before taking on Mercer Sunday at 1 p.m.  The game Sunday versus Mercer has been designated as the Senior Day matchup as VMI will recognize seniors Erin Kozlowski, Whitney Edwards-Roberson, Gabby Criscione, Maria Vargas and Sarah Anschutz with a presentation at 12:15 p.m.

VMI (3-10, 0-3) is coming off a dominant 6-0 win over South Carolina State this past Sunday as the Keydets dipped out of league play for one game following their match last Friday at UNCG. Freshman Isabella Bruzonic scored her first career hat trick with three goals in the second half to lead the team to victory. Senior Sarah Anschutz scored her first career game-winning goal by putting VMI on the board first in the eighth minute while Maria Vargas and Riley Flanagan also notched goals for the Keydets in the win.
 
About The Citadel Bulldogs (8-4, 2-2)
The Bulldogs enter the match coming off a hard-fought 4-2 loss to league leader Samford this past Sunday after defeating Chattanooga by a 2-0 count last Friday.  The weekend prior, The Citadel earned a 2-0 win over ETSU before falling to Western Carolina and enter this weekend with a 2-2 Southern Conference record. This season, the Bulldogs also have Division I wins over Gardner-Webb, USC Upstate, Presbyterian, and Stetson to go toward their overall 8-4 mark.
 
Suzuka Yosue leads the Southern Conference with eight goals on the season – one ahead of VMI freshman Riley Flanagan – in addition to leading the league in assists with 10 for the year. With her eight goals and 10 assists she also leads the SoCon with 26 points on the season.
 
Sophie Saldivar ranks second on the team with five goals while Jordyn Geller and Alex Madden are tied for third with four apiece. Ani Ford is also a key distributor as she owns four assists in 2021 and Saldivar is third in helpers with three for the season.
 
About the Mercer Bears (5-4-2, 2-1-1)
The Bears have registered wins over the likes of Jacksonville, Georgia State, Jackson State, Western Carolina and Chattanooga while falling to difficult opponents in Auburn, Stetson, North Florida and Georgia Southern.
 
This past weekend, the Bears fell by a close 1-0 margin to Samford before turning around and topping Chattanooga by a 1-0 count
 
Ally Fordham leads the team with five goals for the year with Mackenzie Gassie ranking second with three. Lana Whitfield, Aliah Kitchens and Payton Schurr have each contributed two to this point.  Whitfield leads the squad with three assists on the season.
 
Jordyn Ebert has played every minute this season in the goal box through 11 games and has allowed just eight goals for a 0.70 goals-against average and 84 percent save percentage. She has logged 43 saves and has five shutouts during the 2021 campaign having faced 122 shot attempts.
