VMI to Face The Citadel in SoCon Tourney Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The VMI women's soccer team will travel to The Citadel Tuesday afternoon to open the 2021 Southern Conference Tournament in Charleston, South Carolina.
 
The No. 10 seed Keydets (3-15-1, 0-8-1) will take on the No. 7 seed Bulldogs (9-6-2, 3-4-2) at 3 p.m. Tuesday at WLI Field in Charleston, South Carolina. The winner of the match will travel to No. 2 seed Furman in the quarterfinals set for Friday, October 29 at 6 p.m. in Greenville, South Carolina.
 
Samford claimed the No. 1 seed in the championship after posting an 9-0-0 league mark this season. The Bulldogs claimed at least a share of the regular-season championship for the eighth straight year. 
 
The tournament begins Tuesday with a pair of first-round matches on campus sites. The quarterfinal round follows on Oct. 29 with the semifinal round set for Oct. 31, both hosted by top-seed Samford and No. 2 seed Furman. The championship will be played at the highest remaining seed on Nov. 6 or 7.
 
Samford downed Chattanooga, 3-1, on Sunday to conclude the regular season, while Furman won 4-0 at The Citadel in Sunday's regular-season finale.
 
Western Carolina went 5-4 in league play to earn the No. 3 seed. The Catamounts will match up with No. 6 seed UNCG in the quarterfinals in a rematch of Sunday's regular-season finale in which the Spartans won 1-0. The squads will square off on Friday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. in Greenville, South Carolina.
 
ETSU is the No. 4 seed and will take on No. 5 Mercer on Friday, Oct. 29, at 6:30 p.m. in Birmingham, Alabama. The Bucs and Bears, who played to a scoreless draw on Sept. 26, each finished with 13 points in the standings, but ETSU won the tiebreaker by beating UNCG. On Sunday, ETSU edged VMI 1-0, while Wofford fell 3-0 at Mercer.
 
The Citadel claimed the No. 7 seed after going 3-4-2 in SoCon action and will host No. 10 VMI, which fell 1-0 to ETSU on Sunday, on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs bested the Keydets 2-0 on Oct. 8.
                                   
Chattanooga finished with 10 points after a 3-5-1 SoCon record and will host Wofford, also 3-5-1 in league play, on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m. The Mocs edged the Terriers, 1-0, in the regular season meeting on Oct. 10.
 
Samford will host either Chattanooga or Wofford on Friday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. CT, while No. 2 Furman will take on the winner of the contest between The Citadel on VMI on Friday at 6 p.m. at Furman's Stone Stadium. 
 
The tournament winner earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
