WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Howard Bison scored once in each half en route to a 2-0 win over the VMI Keydets in women's soccer action, contested Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
In the 16th minute, the Bison opened the scoring with an Anna Mitchell goal, coming off an assist from Makela Davidson. Noelle Mccullom added a second half goal for Howard (3-3-1) to account for the final margin.
VMI dominated possession early and limited Howard to just two shots on goal in the first 39 minutes. Unfortunately for the Keydets, Mitchell's goal was the first and the home team took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The margin grew to 2-0 in the 77th minute on a bizarre play. On a ball played toward the goal, VMI keeper Emily Marbury suffered an injury and was down on the field. Many of the players on the field stopped momentarily, but play was allowed to continue without a stoppage. Mccullom kicked the ball toward the goal, and it went in for a 2-0 advantage that would be the final score.
"I felt we moved the ball exceptionally well today," said VMI head coach Chris Bergmann. "We dominated this game in many facets, we had numerous chances, great fan support and really controlled the match. The only thing missing was finishing our opportunities."
For the match, Howard officially held a 17-11 edge in shots and 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Marbury was credited with five of VMI's (3-6) seven saves, while Howard's two keepers (along with a team save) combined for eight stops.
VMI women's soccer will return to action Sunday, Sept. 25, when the Keydets play host to UNCG in the team's SoCon opener. Action kicks off at 1 p.m.
