Marbury Sets Career-High, But Keydets Fall 2-1

LORETTO, Pa. - The Saint Francis Red Flash scored twice in the first 20-plus minutes and that lead held up, as SFU defeated the VMI Keydets 2-1 in non-conference women's soccer action Friday afternoon in Loretto, Pa.

Goals by Sara Suler and Casey Gallaher were all SFU (2-7) needed to prevail over the Keydets (3-5), who suffered the loss despite a career-high 14 saves by keeper Emily Marbury. The total marked the most saves by a VMI goalkeeper since Sydnie Bligh also stopped 14 shots on Oct. 26, 2014, and the mark was just two off the program record of 16.

SFU struck in the ninth minute, when Suler scored on a chip off a throw-in. Gallaher added her first of the year in the 20th minute, scoring off an assist from Siobhan Bross, to make it 2-0 for the home team.

The Keydets got on the board just 20 seconds later, when Amy Horney converted a penalty kick for her second goal of the season. The score cut the lead to 2-1, but the Keydets could get no closer as SFU handled possession in the second half to hang on for the win.

In its victory, Saint Francis held a 24-9 edge in total shots. SFU goalkeeper Julia Hernan made four saves to Marbury's 14, and in a bit of an oddity, only three corner kicks were attempted in the entire match.

VMI women's soccer will return to action Sunday, facing Howard in a road match in Washington, D.C. Opening kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
