BALTIMORE, Md. - Morgan Davis and John Kim set school records, but the Loyola Greyhounds edged the VMI Keydets in men's and women's swimming action Wednesday night in Baltimore, Md. The Keydet men (4-4) dropped a 146-123 decision and the VMI women (2-5) fell 147-67.
On the men's side, the Keydets turned in an impressive night that included six race wins and the continuation of Kim's breakthrough season. Kim, the two-time CCSA Swimmer of the Week, won the 100 (51.81) and 200 backstroke (1:55.59) events. His time in the 100 broke his own school record and was the fifth-fastest time in the CCSA this season, while he led a 1-2 finish in the 200 back, as Jacob Smilie was second in 53.39.
Ryan Schmitz was also an event winner Wednesday, prevailing in the 100 free (47.54), while Brady Gannon (21.57) and Niko Nemceff (21.76) went 1-2 in the 50 free. The other individual event winner was Jarred Nagle, who took the 100 fly in 53.29.
Schmitz, Nagle, Gannon and Nemceff then won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:26.25, with Schmitz setting a rat record in the 50 free with the leadoff leg of 21.59.
Finally, Bret Tomajczyk had a pair of second place finishes in the breaststroke events, finishing the 100 in 1:01.41 and the 200 in 2:15.99.
On the women's side, Davis, who was coming off the first conference weekly award for a VMI female swimmer ever, set a new school record in the 400 IM with a time of 5:00.32 and finished fourth.
It was Gabbie Galvez, however, who was the lone event winner on the day, taking the 50 free in 25.70. Natalie Rivas was second in the 100 (55.22) and McKenzie Raber earned a runner-up finish in the 200 (1:58.71). All three teamed with freshman Calle Biles for a second-place finish in the 200 free relay, as Rivas touched the wall on her anchor leg in 1:41.42.
In addition, Biles was third in the 200 fly (1:04.05) and Isabel French was third in the 200 breast (2:36.84). Finally, French, Biles and Emma Perez teamed with first-year cadet Carisa Kunkle to set a new rat record in the 400 medley relay (4:30.37).
The dual concluded the 2016 portion of this year's VMI swimming and diving schedule, as the teams will not return to action until the women's squad faces James Madison and Marshall in a tri-meet Jan. 20-21.
