ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy's Meghan Hegarty scored with just over six minutes remaining in regulation, breaking a 1-1 tie and sending the Mids to a dramatic 2-1 win over the VMI Keydets in non-conference women's soccer action Friday night in Annapolis, Md.
The Keydets (1-2), who had trailed since the 45th minute, tied the match in the 77th on a goal by freshman Olivia Cotton. In the 84th minute, however, Navy's (2-1) Eleanor Pratt passed the ball from the top of the 20-yard box to the near post. It found Hegarty's foot there for her first goal of the year, and the eventual 2-1 Navy victory.
Goalkeeper Darien Dunham was a key factor in the match, making 10 saves to combat a 29-6 Navy edge in the shot category. Taygan Grundy made three saves for Navy.
The Keydets survived a Navy barrage in the early going, one that saw the Mids get off six shots in the first 10 minutes. Dunham stopped the two that were on goal, but the rush continued. The Keydets finally got their first try in the 35th minute, but Blake Cashin was stopped by Grundy to keep the match scoreless.
With just 34 seconds left in the half, Navy finally broke through. A cross off a set piece inside the six-yard box paid dividends, and Lexi Ricketts was able to get a shot by Dunham to put Navy up, 1-0. That was the score at halftime.
Dunham made a pair of saves early in the second half, and the Keydets were also helped when a Clare MacAdam try hit the post at 56:24.
VMI tested Grundy at 59:24 and 68:28, and finally broke through in the 77th minute. A Kayla Blake pass from midfield found Cotton at the top of the 18, and Cotton was able to beat Grundy 1 vs. 1 for the tying goal. Just under seven minutes later, however, Hegarty was able to provide the eventual game-winner.
VMI women's soccer will return to action Friday, Sept. 4, when the Keydets travel to Radford to take on a former Big South foe, the Radford Highlanders. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
