NEWARK, N.J. - The VMI Keydets went 1-2 in five different events, including a sweep of the short sprints by Natalie Rivas, en route to a 114-54 win over Saint Peter's in non-conference women's swimming and diving action Saturday in Newark, N.J. The victory was VMI's (1-5) first win of the 2015-16 season.
Rivas easily handled both the 50 (25.68) and 100 free (57.92) to highlight VMI's first win of the season, as she won the shorter distance by over half a second and then prevailed in the longer discipline by over two seconds. Gabbie Galvez and Sophia Delbondio finished second in those events respectively.
The 100 IM, 100 back and 100 breast were also kind to the Keydets. McKenzie Raber won the IM, outdueling teammate Madison Curran 1:05.51 - 1:07.47. Orla Jordan (1:03.45) beat Curran (1:05.61) in the 100 back, and Rebecca Serrano (1:19.83) beat Ally Van Valen (1:22.31) to win the 100 breast.
Both Jordan and Serrano were double winners, as the freshman prevailed in the 200 back (2:19.00) and Serrano won the 200 breast unopposed with a 2:59.50 time.
VMI women's swimming and diving returns to action next weekend, when the Keydets take on Loyola (Md.) and Howard in a tri-meet. The event will be hosted by Loyola in Baltimore, Md.
