BALTIMORE, Md. - Gabbie Galvez set a new school record in the 100 fly, leading the VMI women's swimming and diving team at a tri-meet hosted by Loyola Saturday in Baltimore, Md. The Keydets (1-7) dropped both ends of the meet, losing to Howard 108-87 and Loyola 187-45 in the team's final meet of the winter season.
Galvez finished fourth in her best event, the 100 fly, as she touched the wall in 1:01.27. The time broke Galvez's record performance, set last season, by over a second and a half.
Natalie Rivas highlighted VMI's other efforts at the meet, winning the 50 free and finishing second in the 100 free. Rivas touched the wall in 25.26 in the shorter distance and in 56.23 in the 100. It was her third consecutive win in the 50, as she has not been defeated in the event since Oct. 23.
Galvez and Rivas teamed with Sophia Delbondio and Haley Scott to finish second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:43.30. Meanwhile, McKenzie Raber was second in the 500 free (5:26.37) and third in the 200 free (2:02.33).
VMI women's swimming and diving will return to action when the squad opens the spring portion of its campaign Jan. 23, when the Keydets take on Ferrum and Washington & Lee in a tri-meet at the Generals' home pool.
