BALTIMORE, Md. - McKenzie Raber set her second school record of the weekend, posting a new Keydet best in the 1000 free to lead the VMI swimming and diving teams on day two at the CCSA North Invite, hosted by UMBC in Baltimore, Md. The Keydets dropped each end of the dual scoring on both the men's and women's sides of the meet, falling to UMBC, Gardner-Webb and on the men's side only, NJIT.
Raber posted an 11:07.75 time to lead the Keydets in Sunday's action, finishing sixth overall in her event. Much like her 500 free record performance Saturday, Raber swam very consistently as 13 of her 20 splits sat between 33.04 and 33.65, with two of those splits being sub-33 seconds.
In other results on the women's side, Sophia DelBondio finished eighth in the 50 free, touching the wall in 25.94 seconds, just ahead of teammate Haley Scott's ninth-place, 26.17 effort.
The VMI women fell in both of the dual meet scores, dropping a 157-131 decision to UMBC and a 141-126 score to Gardner-Webb. The GWU score was a 29-point improvement over last season's Keydet loss in Boiling Springs, however.
On the men's side, the Keydets fell 173-152 to the hosts, while also losing 151-129 to NJIT and 157-124 to Gardner-Webb. The VMI men were led by their efforts in the 50 free, where Connor McMahon finished seventh in 22.42 and John Kelly placed ninth in 22.59.
In addition, Christian Shaner was ninth in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 54.15.
VMI swimming and diving returns to action Oct. 25, as both the men's and women's programs face American University in a dual meet. The opening swim in Washington, D.C. is set for 12:30 p.m.
