CONWAY, S.C.- The VMI women's soccer team was defeated 3-0 by the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Sat., Oct. 8 at Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium. Coastal tallied a pair of scores in the first half, and never looked back, outshooting the Keydets 20-2 on the match.
The match commenced at 10 a.m. due to the VMI vs. Coastal Carolina football game, and featured three saves for VMI goalkeeper Amanda Berrios. The Keydets (3-7-2, 0-3-1 Big South) were able to generate a shot by Sarah Putney in the opening half, and a chance by Allie Segura in the second stanza that was stopped by backup Coastal goalkeeper Megan Spencer.
Coastal (1-11-1, 1-3 Big South) struck first in the 26th minute on a penalty kick that was sent home by Morgan Thomas as the Chanticleers took a 1-0 lead. Coastal struck again nearly three minutes later in the 28th minute as Hannah Brown capitalized on a rebound off of Berrios to stretch the Coastal advantage to 2-0 with 17 minutes remaining in the opening half.
The Chants tacked on an insurance goal in the 76th minute, as Cami Sklandy headed home a service from Thomas off a corner to seal the match.
VMI returns to action Thurs., Oct. 13, hosting the Winthrop Eagles from Patchin Field. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
