RALEIGH, N.C. - N.C. State won seven matches, including two via pin, to defeat VMI 28-10 in non-conference wrestling action Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum.
The Wolfpack (3-5) got falls from Quinton Godley at 174 lbs. and Andrew Tumlin at 197 lbs., as well as a major decision from Ray Ward at 165 lbs. The Keydets (1-4) got three wins on the afternoon, including a major decision from sophomore Andrew Szymborski, who wrestled up at 184 lbs. for the second straight match.
NCSU jumped out to an early advantage, as Mike Moreno scored a 6-1 decision at 125 lbs., before the Keydets knotted the score on Luke Todd's 5-1 decision at 133 lbs. In that match, Todd entered the third period trailing 1-0, but scored a reversal and picked up a pair of stalling points called against Scott Norris, while the riding time point wrapped up the scoring.
The hosts then countered to take command of the match with five consecutive wins. After decisions by Dale Shull (141 lbs.), Bobby Ward (149 lbs.) and Colton Palmer (157 lbs.) put the Wolfpack up 12-3, Ward's 12-4 major decision over Matt Brock extended the lead. Godley then clinched the match for NCSU, pinning John Dommert at the 5:12 mark to push the score to 22-3.
Szymborski broke NCSU's run with his team-best fourth major decision of the season, improving to 2-0 at 184 lbs. this season with a 10-2 defeat of Cedric Moore. After Tumlin pinned Vinnie Gallo at 197 lbs., Keydet junior Josh Wine improved to 9-0 on the season with a 5-2 decision of Eloheim Palma to wrap up the match.
VMI returns to action on Wednesday evening, playing host to Franklin & Marshall. The dual is set for a 7:30 p.m. start at The Thunderdome, on Post at VMI.
