Keydets Fall to Saint Joseph's, 9-6

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. ? The Saint Joseph's Hawks knocked off the VMI Keydets 9-6 Saturday in MAAC lacrosse action played in Philadelphia, Pa. The visitors scored four of the game's final five goals, but could not overcome an 8-2 halftime deficit.

With the win, Saint Joseph's moves to 4-5 overall, and 2-1 in MAAC action. VMI falls to 1-8 and 0-3 in league play, as the Keydets have now dropped six in a row.

The Hawks struck early in the first quarter, scoring the game's first two goals at 11:55 and 9:03 to take a 2-0 advantage. VMI fired back at the 4:11 mark, as Dave Padgett, who normally plays on the defensive midfield, scored for the first time since 2007. Padgett's goal cut the Saint Joseph's margin to one, but the homestanding Hawks pushed it back to two moments later, when Charlie Gorman tallied his 10th goal of the season, putting the home team up 3-1. The teams then closed the quarter by trading scores, and the Keydets trailed 4-2 after one period.

Saint Joseph's took over the game in the second, outscoring the Keydets 4-0 to take a six-goal advantage, 8-2. VMI managed nine shots in the period, including five on goal, but Hawks' keeper Erik Hotaling made saves on each of those five attempts to preserve that margin into halftime. At the intermission, Saint Joseph's had turned the ball over 13 times to just eight such miscues for VMI, and the Keydets had outshot the Hawks 18-15. However, the home team held the 8-2 advantage.

The Hawks scored midway through the third to take their biggest lead of the day, 9-2, but the Keydets mounted a rally. Tim Moran scored on an EMO at 6:33, cutting the lead back to six. Saint Joseph's held firm the rest of the quarter, and VMI could not continue its rally until the 4:44 mark of the final period, when Brett Leonard scored off a dish from Keith Long, making it 9-4. Less than two minutes later, Jacob Weimer found the back of the net to chop the margin to just four, 9-5, and Moran would add his second marker with 34 seconds remaining, accounting for the final margin, 9-6.

For the game, the Keydets were led by Moran, who had two goals and an assist. Freshman keeper Alex Benedick, who had started each of the last two games, entered after halftime and made five saves to aid the VMI rally attempt. Saint Joseph's was led by Sean Evans, who had four points, thanks to two goals and two assists. Hotaling led the Hawks defensively with his 12 saves.

VMI lacrosse will return to action next Saturday, as the Keydets travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take on the Marist Red Foxes in a MAAC matchup. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
