Bowman, Bats Dominant In Baseball's 21-1 Win Over Maryland-Eastern Shore

LEXINGTON, Va.? An eight-day layoff for final exams did nothing to cool the VMI bats, as the Keydets established a new school record with 23 hits in a 21-1 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday evening at Gray-Minor Stadium.

The hit parade was led by Sam Roberts, who equaled a school-best by pounding out six hits, including five singles and a double, tying a record set by Bobby Ross in 1950 and matched by Warren Williams in 1992.

VMI (24-22), meanwhile, got a strong outing on the mound from Michael Bowman, who allowed one run on four hits through six innings, striking out eight while walking a pair.

“I was proud of how we came out and pitched, played defense and had great at bats after taking eight days off,” said Ikenberry. “We had a great energy level throughout the game and really took the game to them.'

The Keydets scored in each of the first five innings, batting around in both the five-run fourth inning and the seven-run fifth.

The Hawks (6-46) scored their lone run of the game in the third. With two outs and runners at the corners, Remo Orsini stole second base, sliding in just ahead of Mike Roberts' throw, allowing Phil Vaughn to scamper home.

Orsini accounted for two of the Hawks five hits in the contest, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

Sam Roberts' 6-for-7 outing included four runs scored and three RBIs, while he raised his batting average 27 points to .336. Justin Hess notched a career-best 5-for-5 night, collecting a double and a triple. Jordan Ballard's 3-for-5 night included his team-leading tenth home run, while Justin Topping went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

Hawk starter Elliott Arrington (1-7) took the loss, allowing 11 runs, ten earned, on 11 hits in four innings, striking out one.

The Keydets and Hawks play game two of the weekend series on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. at Gray-Minor Stadium.
