VMI falls to The Citadel at SoCon Tournament

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Despite rallying in the fourth and fifth innings to knot the score at 7-7, the No. 8 seed VMI baseball team fell to rival No. 5 seed The Citadel by 21-11 run rule score in eight innings Wednesday morning at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.

The loss completes the 2026 campaign for the Keydets while the Bulldogs advance to Game 3 of the tournament to face No. 4 seed Wofford College at 4 p.m.

After a rough start in which the Bulldogs (31-24) built a 4-0 lead after the opening inning and eventual 7-1 lead after three innings, the Keydets (28-27) rallied to tie the game at 7-all after scoring three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

The tie was short-lived, however, as The Citadel put up one more score in the bottom half of the fifth then exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to go back up by a 13-7 score with three innings left to play.

Freshman utility Gabe Jenkins hit an inside-the-park home run in the top of the seventh inning to score three runs and keep the Keydets in the game down 13-10, but the Bulldogs never surrendered and put up one run in the bottom of the seventh and again erupted in scoring in the eighth inning by registering seven runs to end the game by way of a run-rule.
