Barham Leads Baseball Past Hawks, 9-1

LEXINGTON, Va.? Senior left-hander Trey Barham scattered five hits and allowed one run over seven innings as VMI took game two of a non-conference series against Maryland-Eastern Shore, 9-1 at Gray-Minor Stadium on Saturday evening.

Barham (3-5) retired 12 of the final 13 batters that he faced in collecting his 21st career win, extending his VMI career record. The Keydets (25-22), meanwhile, pounded out 13 hits and nine runs to back up their hurler's performance.

Sam Roberts continued his torrid weekend at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs after his six-hit night on Friday. Justin Hess also chipped in with three hits, while Tanner Biagini (1-for-2, 2 RBIs) and Jordan Ballard (2-for-4, 3 RBIs) each contributed seventh-inning home runs.

“I thought that we did a nice job tonight of getting the lead early, then putting the game out of reach with some big innings late,” said Ikenberry. “Tanner and Jordan each made adjustments late in the game and came up with home runs to give us a comfortable lead. Trey Barham looked sharp on the mound, and Matt Edwards and Jason Farley came in and threw well to finish out the game.”

Hawk starter Carl Huber (1-9) worked five innings, allowing six runs on nine hits while issuing nine walks. The UMES (6-47) offense was led by Jorge Pichardo, whose 2-for-3 night was the only multiple-hit outing for the Hawks.

A two-run single in the first inning by Jordan Ballard gave the Keydets an early lead, while Sam Roberts' second-inning single plated another run to give the Keydets a 3-0 advantage.

The Hawks rallied in the fourth, stringing together three consecutive singles off of Barham. Pichardo's base knock plated Josh Dunham, and was followed by a bunt single from Kenny Richardson. That was as much as Barham would allow, striking out the final batter of the inning to quell the threat.

VMI sent eight men to the plate in a three-run fifth, with Sam Roberts' two-run single and a sacrifice fly by Brian Sandridge doing the damage. The Keydets pushed the advantage to 9-1 in the seventh, when Biagini's two-run dinger was followed two batters later by Ballard's team-leading 11th round-tripper of the season.

Barham was lifted after seven, giving way to Matt Edwards and Jason Farley, each of whom worked an inning of relief, allowing one base runner each.

The Keydets and Hawks play game three of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Noon at Gray-Minor Stadium.
