#15 Coastal Carolina Claims Game One of Weekend Series, 5-2

LEXINGTON, Va.? Fifteenth-ranked Coastal Carolina scored five runs in the middle innings to take the first game of a three-game, Big South Conference series 5-2 over VMI at Gray-Minor Stadium on Friday evening.

The Chanticleers (35-8, 11-2 Big South) did all of their damage off of Keydet starter Trey Barham (2-5), who surrendered five runs, four earned, on seven hits in six innings. The visitors pieced together two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth, then held on as VMI (21-21, 10-6 Big South) cut the margin to three on Mike Roberts' two-run home run in the eighth.

Roberts' shot to the scoreboard in left field chased Coastal starter Bobby Gagg (6-1) from the contest after scattering five hits and only the two runs through 7.1 innings. Gagg also struck out eight and issued only his fifth walk of the season, with that coming on a 13-pitch at bat to A.J. Yoder in the seventh.

David Anderson and Tommy Baldridge each had a single and a double for Coastal, while Dock Doyle also chipped in with a two-bagger. VMI's Sam Roberts was the only Keydet with multiple hits, collecting a single and a double in his final two plate appearances.

Doyle drove home the Chants first run of the night on a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Anderson scored on a passed ball after his fourth-inning double, before Jose Iglesias made it a 3-0 contest in the fifth, scoring on David Sappelt's base knock through the left-side of the infield. Doyle and Baldridge both scored in the sixth after reaching on doubles.

Keydet relievers Matt Edwards and Daniel Wood combined to work the final three innings, allowing only three hits.

VMI, meanwhile, did not move a runner to third base over the first six innings against Gagg. In the seventh, a sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position, before they were left stranded.

Following Roberts' two-run home run in the eighth, Pete Andrelczyk came on to record the final five outs, allowing only one base runner to reach, with that coming on an error. The right-hander picked up his seventh save of the year.

The game began at 8:30 p.m., after rain caused a 90-minute delay.

The Keydets and Chanticleers play game two of the series on Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
