Swimming & Diving Falls to Davidson, Virginia Tech in FInal Tune-Up for CCSA Championships

MEET RESULTS

RADFORD, Va.- The VMI men's and women's swimming teams wrapped up their regular season on Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center Natatorium, as the men's team fell to Virginia Tech and Davidson, while the women's side dropped decisions to Virginia Tech, Davidson and Radford.

The Keydet men fell 163-57 to Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) rival Davidson while dropping a 137-80 decision to Virginia Tech. In the women's competition, VMI, competing with a full compliment of five team members for the first time this season, fell 196-19 to Davidson, 125-30 to Radford and 140-34 against Virginia Tech.

The Keydets set four season-bests at the event, led by seniors Chris Beyer (Reston, Va.) and Peter Borchelt (Evans, Ga.). Beyer's time of 11:03.89 was the fastest by a VMI swimmer this season in the 1,000 freestyle, while Borchelt's 2:08.93 in the 200 backstroke was also the team's fastest this year.

Meanwhile in the diving competitions, held at Virginia Tech's War Memorial Pool, sophomore Jeff Turner (Arlington, Va.) established a career-best score of 217.50 in the one-meter, while freshman Briana Allard (Fairfax, Va.) did the same in the women's one-meter, scoring 129.90. In addition, Allard's score bettered the school record that she established earlier this season.

In the men's competition, the Keydets also took second and third in the 200 freestyle relay, as Walter Stull (Westminster, Md.), Andrew Jeter (Bristol, W. Va.), Josh Jeffcoat (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Cam Rushton (Springfield, Va.) swam a 1:37.13 for second place, while Joe Kang (Valencia, Calif.), Chuck Snyder (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Preston Craft (Richmond, Va.) and Andrew Baity (Forest, Va.) placed third with a 1:42.23.

The women's side completed their first relay event of the season, as Chelsea Nugent (Glendale, Calif.), Stephanie Ortiz (Stafford, Va.), Atela Tuff (Newnan, Ga.) and Alexa Bernas (Mechanicsville, Va.) swam a 2:07.93 in the 200 freestyle relay.

"This is one of the meets that we go to every year, and we seem to get good times here. I think we're right on track to put up good times at the championship meet," said head coach Bill Nicholson. "We had a lot of season-best times today, we improved our seedings for the Championship prelims, and it was overall a pretty valuable meet for us today, everybody swam well. We were able to put out a women's relay for the first time, and it's nice to get all of the team together to really see what our women's team will look like at Championships. Everybody's swimming well right now, and with another week of hard work, then we'll shave and taper, I think that everyone will be in good position in two weeks. Today was a good way to wrap up the regular season, and now we'll focus solely on Championships."

The VMI swimming and diving teams return to action at the CCSA Championships, being held on Feb. 21-23 in Huntersville, N.C.
