Women's Soccer Suffers 2-0 Loss at Coastal

CONWAY, S.C. ? Following a three-hour weather delay due to lightning in the area, the VMI women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Coastal Carolina in Big South Conference play. With the win, the Lady Chanticleers improve to 8-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big South, while the Keydets fall to 3-8 overall and 0-5 in the League.

Coastal took a 1-0 lead at the 23:28 mark when sophomore Emily McColl passed to junior Emma Humphries in the right corner. She crossed to senior Laura Weiler in the left side of the box. Weiler then beat VMI goalkeeper Jessica Rheinlander for her third goal of the season.

Coastal held an 11-3 shot advantage in the first half, while both teams had two corner kicks in the first 45 minutes. The Lady Chanticleers had a team save on a header by Jessica Robbins at 16:28, while Rheinlander had three first-half saves.

Junior Ashleigh Gunning scored her seventh goal of the season at 56:06. She received a pass from senior Stepheney Gerhardt and dribbled past Rheinlander, who came out about six yards from the goal line. She then had an open net and converted in the left corner, giving Coastal the final 2-0 margin.

Coastal outshot VMI 19-4 in the game and had both corner kicks in the second half. Senior Jaclyn Stoll had one save and earned her third shutout of the season and third straight shutout against VMI. Rheinlander had five saves for the Keydets, while VMI also had a team save on senior Simone Borucinski's bender off a corner kick.

The Keydets return to action on Tuesday afternoon, as they host Southern Virginia at 4 p.m. at Patchin Field.
