BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The VMI women's soccer team wrapped up their 2006 season on Sunday afternoon, dropping an 8-1 decision to Birmingham-Southern on the road in Big South Conference play. With the win, BSC moves to 9-8 overall and 5-3 in the Big South Conference to earn the fourth seed in the upcoming conference tournament, while VMI falls to 5-12 overall and 0-8 in the League.
The Panthers went up early in the first half, scoring in the 13th and 15th minutes as senior Jess Smith and junior Caitlin Gordon recorded their fifth and fourth goals of the season, respectively. VMI answered with its lone goal of the game five minutes later as senior Karen Bill scored off assists from junior Gia Bichara and freshman Audrey Falconi.
Smith found the back of the net again at the 31-minute mark off an assist from Gordon to put BSC up 3-1, and Serena Murphy scored less than six minutes later on a rebounded save, assisted by senior Christy Dettmer, putting the Panthers up 4-1 at the half.
Junior Anne McIntyre put BSC up 5-1 in the 52nd minute off assists from senior Brittney Jones and freshman Kasey Crowe, and Jones scored her first goal of the season less than a minute later off another assist from Dettmer, who then scored her first goal of the year in the 70th minute. Freshman Brittany Lyons wrapped up the scoring at the 75:06 mark off assists from Murphy and Dettmer for the 8-1 BSC win.
Freshman Ruth Hanks picked up her second win of the season in the net for BSC, making four saves, while junior Jessica Rheinlander grabbed ten saves for the Keydets.
BSC recorded 25 shots, led by Dettmer with six, while VMI posted eight, led by Bill with three.
