Longwood Defeats Women's Soccer, 5-1

FARMVILLE, Va.- The VMI women's soccer team fell on the road Wednesday night, as Longwood took a 5-1 victory on senior night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. With the win, the Lancers who improved their record to 10-5-2, marking their first 10-win campaign since 2002 while the Keydets dropped to 4-10.

In the match, Longwood scored the first two goals and led 3-1 at the intermission. Senior Anna Gravely opened the scoring at 4:45 on a shot to the upper 90, assisted by freshman Kaylyn Mahon. Senior Tiffany Cranescored what proved to be the game-winner at 16:51, assisted by Gravely on a breakaway while beating the keeper.

VMI prevented the shutout less than two minutes later when Audrey Falconi took a loose ball inside the box and beat the keeper for a goal at 18:29. The Lancers added their third goal of the half at 29:10 as Crane tallied again on a similar goal to her first score, assisted by freshman Tia Nardella.

Longwood added two more goals in the second half, the first coming as Gravely scored her second goal of the match at 63:04 with a shot over the keeper's head, assisted by Crane. Mahon finished the scoring at 73:24 with an assist from classmate Sarah Fening as the Lancers defeated VMI for the third time since 2003 (3-0).

Longwood took a 22-6 advantage in shots, and had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Senior keeper Heather Storrie (88:22, 1ga) played almost the entire match in front of the net for the Lancers before leaving late with three saves. Redshirt-sophomore Emily Grove (1:38) finished the match in goal. VMI split time between Kathleen Underwood (45:00, 3ga) who played the first half with one save and Jessica Rheinlander (45:00, 2ga) who played the second half with six saves.

The VMI women's soccer team returns to action on Saturday afternoon, with a key showdown against Charleston Southern slated for 1 p.m. at Patchin Field.
