Women's Soccer Evens Record with 4-1 Victory over Delaware State

DOVER, Del. - Alexa Bernas and Colleen Redmond scored two goals each to lead VMI to a 4-1 win over Delaware State in women's soccer action Wednesday. The Keydets improved to 5-5 on the season, while Delaware State fell to 0-7.

VMI scored first when Bernas found the net off a missed shot by Erin Squires in the 12th minute. Delaware State evened the score 65 seconds later when Ashley Fisher beat VMI goalie Jessica Rheinlander for her first collegiate goal off an assist by Jennifer Palmore.

However, the Keydets regained the lead in the 20th minute when Bernas put a shot past DSU netminder Christina Benenour, giving VMI a 2-1 lead, which is how it remained until the second half.

Redmond got on the board in the 54th minute, when she gave VMI a 3-1 lead on a free kick. Redmond closed out the scoring when she beat Benenour again after the Delaware State goalie stopped her first shot attempt at 62:15.

VMI had 22 shots, including 18 on goal, while Fisher's score was Delaware State's only shot on goal. Benenour was credited with 13 saves for Delaware State.

* Junior Colleen Redmond has now scored a goal in four straight matches and has collected two or more goals in three straight contests.

* Redmond now has ten goals this season, and is closing in on her own school record of 13 goals in a season that she set in 2003. Sophomore Alexa Bernas' eight goals this season is already the third highest single-season goal total in school history, behind Redmond's 2003 & 2005 campaigns.

* Bernas' three game-winning goals are a new school record for most in a season and most in a career.

* Redmond's 12 shots on Wednesday vs. Delaware State were a school record, surpassing the old record of 11 which she accomplished twice.

* Redmond now has totalled 29 career goals while Bernas has nine career goals.

* VMI currently sports conference leaders in all three major offensive categories. Redmond now leads the Big South with 10 goals and is tied with Bernas for the most points, as each has 22 points. Bernas leads the league with six assists. (Through games of Sept. 28)

* Before this season, the program had won four contests in its two year history. They have already won five contests this season, including three over Division I opponents.

* The Keydets are now 3-1 on the road, while only 2-3 at home and 0-1 in neutral site contests.
