RADFORD, Va. - Radford scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game and junior goalkeeper Tara Oleartchick made five saves as it shut out VMI, 3-0 on Homecoming at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders improve to 5-9 overall and 2-3 in the Big South, while the Keydets fall to 6-7, 0-3.
Senior Kara Ramer (Midlothian, Va.) put the Highlanders up 1-0 just 30 seconds into the match. She took a feed from senior Jonita Hooker (Woodbridge, Va.), made a few moves in the box and beat VMI keeper Jessica Rheinlander (Manassas, Va.) near post from six yards out. It was Ramer's second goal within 32 seconds of a match.
At 9:47, junior Lisa Channon (Oxford, England) scored on a breakaway to give RU a 2-0 lead. It was her team leading fifth goal. The Keydets' Colleen Redmond had a chance to cut the lead in half but her 30 yard free kick was saved by a diving Oleartchick. The Highlanders, who outshot the Keydets 12-3 in the first half, had several chances to add to the score but were unable to convert.
In the second half, VMI had an early chance as Alexa Bernas' (Midlothian, Va.) shot off a turnover just whizzed by the outside of the post. Radford got some breathing room in the 84th minute when sophomore Brianna Kipper (Hayes, Va.) chipped the ball over Rheinlander from 20 yards out. Sophomore Jenna Ramer (Midlothian, Va.) assisted on the play.
Radford outshot VMI, 22-6 and held a slight edge in corners, 5-4. Rheinlander finished the match with five saves. Channon recorded a game high seven shots, while Redmond led the Keydets with two.
Radford will be off until next Saturday when it hosts UNC Ashville on Oct. 16 at 2 pm. VMI will entertain Manhattan on Monday, Oct. 10 at 2 pm.
