LEXINGTON, Va. - After a VMI goal tied the contest with just two seconds remaining in regulation, Hilary McKay's blast from 25 yards out in the first minute of overtime lifted the UNC Asheville women's soccer team to a 3-2 win Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.
The win keeps the Bulldogs (10-3, 5-1 Big South) on top of the conference standings, while VMI (7-10, 1-5 Big South) is still battling for one of eight slots in the conference tournament. Saturday's outcome marks the third straight contest in which the Keydets have given a team in the upper half of the Conference standings a tough game, as VMI defeated High Point last Saturday 4-2 and fell at Liberty 2-1 on Tuesday.
The hosts jumped on top in the game's 19th minute, when Colleen Redmond scored her 12th of the season on a header after a cross by Hatley Clifford. That lead would stand up for 60 minutes, as UNCA could not find the equalizer until the 80th minute, when Robyn Busha knotted the game at one with her well-placed header off a corner kick by Juliana Duncan.
The Bulldogs did not waste time from there, as they gained the lead just over a minute later on McKay's first goal of the day, an unassisted tally on a one-on-one opportunity with VMI keeper Jessica Rheinlander from 15 yards out.
But the Keydets were not done. With time winding down, Alexa Bernas put home a loose ball in front of the goal with only two seconds remaining in regulation, sending VMI to the first overtime game in the program's history, where McKay's goal only 40 seconds in decided it.
UNCA held a decisive advantage in shots (26-9), corner kicks (3-1) and offsides (8-1). Rheinlander made 10 saves in goal for VMI, while UNCA's Michaelle Mattos needed only five saves to pick up the win.
The Keydets return to action Friday afternoon in their final home contest of the season, hosting Birmingham-Southern at 3 p.m. UNCA continues their road trip to Virginia with a match-up with Longwood on Sunday, with kickoff in Farmville slated for 2 p.m.
