BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- A pair of hat tricks by junior Leeanna Woodworth and senior Liz Kier led Gardner-Webb to an 8-1 women's soccer victory over VMI Friday afternoon at Varsity Field in Boiling Springs, N.C.
Woodworth finished the contest with four goals and one assist, while Kier netted three goals as the Bulldogs improved to 2-1 on the season.
VMI (0-2) saw sophomore Colleen Redmond score their first goal as a Division I program in the 50th minute of the contest. However, that was the only score the Bulldogs would allow, as the Keydets took seven shots in the contest with three of those coming on goal.
Kier got the scoring started for Gardner-Webb, scoring her third goal of the season in the tenth minute. After that, Woodworth scored the next three goals, giving the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead 27 minutes into the contest.
Kier finished off her hat trick just before the break, scoring in the 31st and 44th minute, bringing the halftime margin to 6-0.
The Keydets responded just five minutes into the second period, as Redmond scored her unassisted goal, shooting to the right side of the goal, beating Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Sue Rettinger.
Woodworth answered in the next minute, bringing her goal total on the day to four, matching her performance in her last game. Freshman Ashley Gesuale scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 58th minute, bringing the score to 8-1.
VMI keeper Jessica Rheinlander played the entire game, notching two saves in the contest. Three GWU keepers saw time in the game, combining to make two saves.
VMI returns to the field Wednesday afternoon, when they host Roanoke College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Patchin Field.
