Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to The Citadel, 3-2

CHARLESTON, S.C.- Two first-half goals for Colleen Redmond weren't enough, as The Citadel scored twice in the final 13 minutes of the contest to notch a 3-2, come-from-behind win over VMI Friday evening.

Redmond tallied her second goal of the season in the 16th minute, giving the Keydets (0-5) their first lead of the season at 1-0.

The Citadel's (2-5) Julie Austin answered just two minutes later, when she scored her first goal of the season to level the score at one.

However, Redmond would allow the Keydets to take a lead into halftime, after she converted a penalty kick in the 34th minute.

Play would remain even over the first 30 minutes of the second half, as neither team could find the back of the net until the 78th minute, when Debbie White knotted the game at two.

With only three minutes remaining in the contest, Lauren Merchant tallied her fifth goal of the season, giving the Bulldogs their second consecutive win.

Keydet goalkeeper Jessica Rheinlander reached double-digits in saves for the second straight contest and for the third time this season. The Citadel outshot VMI 25-10 in the contest, however, the Keydets were whistled for seven offsides calls, while the Bulldogs were called offsides only twice.

As usual, the contest between the two bitter rivals was a physical affair, with 39 fouls called and seven yellow cards handed out.

The Keydets' road trip continues Sunday afternoon, when they tangle with High Point University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Albion Millis Stadium in High Point, N.C.
