BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Six different players scored for Birmingham-Southern as the Panthers defeated VMI 6-0 in Big South women's soccer action Saturday evening.
Catherine Spiker got the scoring started in the fourth minute for BSC (6-7-2, 4-1-1 Big South), tallying her second goal of the season on a rebound after a VMI defender stopped a shot by Caitlin Gordon. Gordon got her own goal eight minutes later, scoring her fourth goal of the season on a rebound on a shot by Anne McIntyre.
The Panthers went on to score two goals midway through the first half, when Jess Smith scored her first goal of the season in the 25th minute and McIntyre scored just 30 seconds later.
VMI (0-11, 0-4 Big South) trailed 4-0 at the half, however, could not manage much offense in the second half either. Only one of the Keydets' five second-half shots were on goal, as it was saved by BSC keeper Andria Gray.
Ashley Welch gave the Panthers a 5-0 lead in the 49th minute after an assist by Anna Daniels-Mulholland. Christy Dettmer rounded out the scoring with her first goal of the season in the 57th minute.
VMI keeper Jessica Rheinlander notched her seventh double-digit saves game of the season. Rheinlander made 12 saves in the contest, while Gray and Tarra Kohler each played 45 minutes in goal for BSC.
VMI returns to action Tuesday afternoon, when they host Big South Conference foe Winthrop. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
