VMI Women's Soccer Loses at Longwood, 5-1

Farmville, Va. -- The Longwood University women's soccer team scored three minutes in to the game and never looked back as the Lancers defeated VMI 5-1 on rainy senior night at Lancer Field. Longwood's victory gives the Lancers a record of 9-6-1, while the Keydets drop to 3-11.

The Lancers came out in full force in the opening period as sophomore midfielder Melissa Cary scored at the 3:50 mark off a cross from senior forward Phoebe Munson. Freshman forward Tiffany Crane made it 2-0 when she dribbled the ball past the goalie and shot it into the back of the net. VMI's Collen Redmond connected on a penalty kick just before the end of the half to put the Keydets on the board.

Sophomore midfielder beat the goalie for a score two minutes into the second stanza, giving Longwood a 3-1 advantage. Crane tallied her second goal of the evening as Lockley crossed the ball from the right side into the middle at the 52:01 mark. The Keydetes failed to convert a second penalty kick with 20 minutes to go, while junior forward Christine Clay sealed the victory at the 72:48 mark, scoring off a rebound from a missed shot.

Longwood took the advantage on shots 21-5 and corner kicks 7-3. The Lancers split time in the cage between junior keeper Lindsay Naill (45 min., 0 saves, 1 GA) and freshman Heather Storrie. VMI keeper Haley Gross recorded 11 saves for the Keydets.
