VMI Women's Soccer Hangs Tight, but Drops 2-0 Match at Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team won its third straight home game Friday night as the Panthers blanked VMI, 2-0 in Big South Conference women's soccer action at the BSC Soccer Park. Sophomores Jordan Spencer and Ashley Welch recorded the goals for BSC (5-8-2) as the Panthers fired a season-high 27 shots and 14 shots-on-goal on the night.

The first Birmingham-Southern goal came in the first half as Spencer was able to break the defending wall on a direct free kick from 20 yards out. The goal was one of Spencer's two shots-on-goal for the game. BSC posted 16 shots in the first half and held the visiting Keydets (3-8) to two.

The Panthers continued to pressure the VMI defense, posting 11 more shots and six shots-on-goal in the second period. Welch's goal came at the 83:27 mark when teammate Meredith Humber fired a shot from 22 yards out and the ball bounced out of VMI keeper Haley Gross' hands onto thecross bar and in front of Welch, who drilled it into the near corner for her second goal of the season.

Gross sustained a myriad of shots during the last ten minutes of the game as BSC attackers fired in six shots-on-goal. The keeper recorded 14 saves on the night for the Keydets.

As the team leader with 38 shots on the season, freshman Christy Dettmer notched a team high six shots, two on frame for the Panthers. She was followed by fellow freshman Brittney Jones who recorded four shots and four shots-on-goal. Spencer and Welch each added three shots, two on
frame.

VMI's Colleen Redmond, who entered the game with eight goals and 33 shots on the year, was limited to two shots for the contest. Vanessa Berrios posted one shot for the Keydets, who fall to 3-8-0 in their inaugural season.

VMI will continue its Alabama road trip with a visit to Alabama A&M on Sunday at 11 a.m. central standard time.
