LEXINGTON, Va. – The Southern Conference announced Monday afternoon that senior firstbaseman
Grayson Fitzwater was named SoCon Player of the Week.
This is Fitzwater's first weekly honor, and the first for any Keydet this season. There have been eight total (five players and three pitchers) conference weekly awards for the Keydets in the
Sam Roberts era.
Fitzwater went off against Western Illinois, slashing .727/2.000/.789 with eight hits, two doubles, four homers to pair with nine RBIs and six runs. Fitzwater drew seven walks and had two stolen bases.
In Friday's doubleheader, the lefty powerhouse went six-for-seven, totaling four home runs, five runs, and seven RBIs to earn the D1 Mid-Major LOUD! Performance of the Day. Fitzwater's game-tying fourth home run in game two was his 47th career homer, setting a new VMI career home runs record. Between games three and four, Fitzwater was intentionally walked five times and still managed to secure a hit in each game.
The Keydets swept the Leathernecks, going 4-0 in the series, and earned their fifth-straight victory. VMI moves up to 14-2 entering its midweek clash against Norfolk State before hosting Cornell for a three-game series this weekend.
