Rifle members set for Junior Olympics competition

LEXINGTON, Va. – Four members of the VMI rifle team will compete Monday and Tuesday, April 14-15, at the Junior Olympic Rifle Championship hosted by USA Shooting at the Judith Legerski Competition Center in Anniston, Alabama.
 
Junior Andrianna Sanders, sophomore Kyle Kemp and freshmen Wuyue Xie and Elizabeth Stann will represent the VMI rifle program at the event. They qualified by way of their air rifle scores at a competition this past December. Keydet Darian Tweedell also qualified but will not compete due to injury.
 
VMI will compete in the air rifle segment of the competition.
 
"This is a tremendous opportunity for our cadets to compete at the national level," said VMI Head Rifle Coach Bill Bither. "In order to qualify for this USA Shooting event, our cadets had to perform at a really high level. Rah Virginia Mil!"
 
Sanders hit a 582, Xie a 576, Kemp logged a 574 and Stann reached the qualifying mark with a 572. The qualifying mark was set at 570.
 
Athletes will practice for competition Sunday before Day 1 of the event begins Monday (Apr. 14) with a 60-shot record match. On Tuesday's Day 2, a 60-shot record match with ensue followed by the top eight men and top eight women going into their respective finals to determine the winner.
