LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving picked up more points on Friday at the America East Championships at Goodall Pool.
Highlighting the evening was
Sam Castle who earned second place in the 100 backstroke with a record-breaking time of 48.50, just 0.13 seconds away from first place. Castle broke that same team record during the preliminary trials with a time of 48.63.
Jack Mills continued his strong stretch, shattering the Rat and team records in the 200 freestyle en route to a seventh-place mark of 1:37.75. Also securing a top mark was
Ethan Griffith who took home fifth in the 400 IM with a time of 3:59.82.
Both men's and women's 400 medley relay squads broke team records.
Ava Phillips,
Walden Wilder,
Noelle Tong, and
Mackenzie Byrne finished in 4:01.28 for the women while Castle,
Layne Tucker,
Max Brunner, and
Matthew Picard finished in 3:18.01 for the men.
Isabelle Haer capped off the diving portion for the Keydets with a 10th place mark in the one-meter, earning 211.50 points.
Also scoring points for the VMI women was Tong who placed 14th in the 100 backstroke (58.95) and Byrne who finished 18th in the 100 butterfly. Wilder competed in the 100 breaststroke C-Final, earning 22nd with a time of 1:08.58.
Tucker and
Austin Reeder each picked up more points for the Keydets with 12th- and 15th-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke. Picard,
Sam Calder, and
Stephen Russell also produced points for VMI, going 10th, 12th, and 16th respectively in the 200 freestyle. Brunner,
Caleb Wolf, and
Joshua Wolf capped off VMI's scoring with ninth, 14th, and 16th marks in the 100 butterfly.
VMI men have a chance to bump up in the standings on the final day, currently sitting in sixth with 247 points. The women stand in seventh with 88 points heading into day four.
