Young Keydets lead charge against Knights

WEST POINT, N.Y. – VMI Women's Swimming & Diving had its young core put up top times against Army at Crandall Pool Friday evening.

"I am very impressed with our early-season performances," says VMI Swimming Head Coach Scott Thacker. "Four new team records and sixteen program top 10 times in early October are incredible for us. This was a great way to start the season, and we are looking forward to the next few weeks of racing."

The Keydets witnessed three Rat records snapped, with 12 landing in the top 10 all-time in the 189-16 defeat. In total, VMI scored in 10 events, with two podium marks.

Freshman Carissa Witte found herself in the program's top 10 in three categories, placing fifth in the 1,000 Freestyle (10:51.71) with 200 and 500 split times helping her hit all three marks. Witte's 1,000 Free time shattered the Rat record that was set in 2021 by over 10 seconds.

Also breaking Rat records from 2021 was freshman Lacy Delzell, who took home third in the 200 Freestyle (1:57.08). Delzell's 200 Free time was good enough to be in the top 10 all-time, along with her mark in the 100 Backstroke (59.08).

Placing top-10 program times were freshmen Maddie Wolfe and Valeria Paulson, who timed well in the 100 Breastroke (1:12.63) and 100 Backstroke (1:01.90), respectively. Sophomore Parker Belle Fogle produced points in the 100 Breastroke (1:09.63) to earn a top time.

The Keydets' 200 Freestyle Relay squad, filled with freshmen Delzell, Witte, Wolfe, and Paulson, destroyed an 11-year-old Rat record (1:40.12) and was seconds shy of breaking the varsity record.

Other freshmen who recorded top-10 program marks were Susan Cushman (2:18.15) and Maria Fitzsimmons (2:20.09) in the 200 IM.

Earning points for the Keydets was sophomore Mackenzie Byrne, who finished third in the 50 Freestyle (24.18) and fifth in the 100 Freestyle (53.49). Senior Noelle Tong secured a point in the 100 Backstroke (59.16).

On the boards and earning points was sophomore Isabelle Haer, earning 179.78 points in the one-meter.
