Cross Country teams finish strong at Paul Short Run

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Competing in a field with over 400 runners, the VMI men's cross country team earned a mark of 28th place out of 47 schools racing the Paul Short Run Saturday afternoon at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus Cross Country Course in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The Keydets totaled 786 points from its top five runners in the 8K race to achieve the placement.

Freshman Kevin Shank led the way for VMI by placing 15th overall in 25:19.8. Fellow freshman Patrick Lowry arrived in 114th place in 26:19.8 and was followed by sophomore Benjamin Hagerich in 153rd in 26:39.1. Also scoring points for VMI were Andrew Hirneisen in 270th in 27:47.3 and Brian Tavenner in 304th place in 28:04.8.

Patrick Kiernan ran the 8K course in 28:24.4 for 326th place, and freshman Michael Jorgensen came in 336th overall in 28:33.8.

John Gibson, Trent Whittaker and Colin Crenshaw also competed for VMI at the race.

"It was our first men's 8K race of the year and our team did well with our freshmen finishing one and two on our team. Kevin Shank strikes again this weekend finishing in the top 15 in a race with over 460 runners.

"I'm very happy with how we competed today as we prepare for the SoCon championship. We have been fortunate that we have a strong leadership base of upperclassmen to help our talented freshman class navigate Division 1 cross country racing."

Up Next
VMI will next compete in two weeks in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where the Keydets will race the USC Upstate Invitational. The October 14 race will begin at 9:45 a.m. at the Roger Milliken Research Center.
