VMI Men Place Fifth at Shamrock Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The VMI men's track and field team got off to a great start to the 2023 outdoor season by placing fifth overall after the third and final day at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational hosted by the City of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
 
The Keydets finished with 58 points overall behind only Duke (100), Slippery Rock (78), Mount St. Mary's (65) and Coastal Carolina (61).
 
Highlights
*Xander Topos placed first in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of personal record time of 54.04 seconds
*Sprinter Nick Brown also arrived in first in the 200 meter dash in 21.82 seconds, a new PR
*D. Alex Fiorillo led the men in the 3000 meter by placing third overall in 8:43.55. He was followed by freshman Ben Hagerich's sixth place time of 9:00.02.
*In the men's 3000 meter steeple, Andrew Hirneisen came in fifth place in 10:17.63
*The4x400 relay squad of Xander Topos, Richard Edwards, Isaiah Blount and Nick Brown came in fourth in 3:21.41
*Isaiah Blount finished seventh in the pole vault with a personal record height of 4.11 meters
*Hunter Davis yielded a 10th-place distance of 13.91m in the shot put

"This was a good meet for the Keydets to start our outdoor season. Personal bests was the theme for our men's team making the team score board on all three days of competition.
