Keydets Complete Day 2 of Winter Classic with Top Performances

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking for momentum with the SoCon Indoor Championships just two weeks away, the VMI men's track and field team earned several top finishes to cap the 2022 VMI Winter Classic Saturday at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
 
Senior Gavin Jenkins started the day strong for the Keydets by placing first overall in the mile run with a time of 4:11.92.
 
Fellow senior Jordin Poindexter competed in the 60-meter finals and came out on top with a time of 6.79 seconds. He later assisted the 4x400 relay team to a first-place mark in 3:16.08. The foursome included Poindexter, Jeremiah Wilks, Richard Edwards and Johnnie Walker. He also competed in the 200 meter and nearly came away with another individual victory but settled for second with a time of 21.49 seconds.
 
D. Alex Fiorillo placed third overall in the 3000 meter with a time of 8:44.37. A day after breaking the school and CPTF record in the 1000 meter, junior Trent Whittaker placed sixth in the 500 meter in 1:07.17 and teammate Andre Jordan placed 12th in 1:09.52.
 
Solomon Ghosh came in seventh in the shot put with a distance of 14.68 meters. Freshman Charles Male earned eighth place in the long jump at 6.73 meters, and Eric Thompson placed 11th in the pole vault at a height of 6.73 meters. Hunter Reed also competed in the vault and placed 14th overall at 3.75m.
 
The Keydets next compete at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships hosted by VMI Feb. 26-27 at the CPTF.

"The team kept pushing itself, which resulted in a series of personal best performances. We have two weeks left and all our training is finally coming together. Both our men and women showed heart and a Never Say Die attitude against some very good division 1 teams. 
 
"Meet records and team records fell because of a very competitive, organized meet for all our guests. Special thanks to our officials, timing staff, announcer, athletic department, physical plant, housekeeping staff and the VMI coaching staff.
