EMMITSBURG, Md. – The VMI men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the 2021-22 seasons Saturday at Mount St. Mary's University (Md.), falling 184-114 on the men's side and 204-91 in women's competition.
Each team recorded several top performances. Sophomore
Anne Bowles paced the women's team with victories in the 100-meter (1:18.58) and 200-meter breaststroke (2:54.14).
London Yerasimides won one 1 meter diving competition with a score of 167.70 and was second in the other 1 meter with a total of 166.45. Freshman
Rachel Greathouse won the 200 free in 2:13.03 in her first collegiate meet and was second in both the 200 fly (2:33.07) and 400 free (4:37.02). Ruki Sarkari took second in the 100 back in 1:12.17,
Kate Taylor was third in the 50 free (29.76) as was
Sarah Liebenow in the 800 free (10:30.27).
Jillian Maher was fourth in both the 100 free and 100 fly and
Carter Wasser was fourth in the 220 back. The 200 medley relay team of Sarkari, Bowles, Maher and Greathouse was second in 2:09.17 while Isabella DeCosta, Taylor, Liebenow and Wasser took third in the 400 free relay in 4:29.10.
Junior
Bridger Thurston had first-place performances in both men's 1 meter (224.65 and 220.25) diving competitions.
Connor Doyle won the 200 free in 2:01.32 and was second in the 200 back in 2:16.01. Freshman
Ethan Griffith finished in 2:15.67 to win the 200 fly and fellow freshman Sam Chopper was second in the 400 (4:24.93) and 800 free (9:08.29).
Ryan Cooper took second in the 200 IM in 2:16.16 and
Jack Sheehan was second in 54.31 in the 100 free.
Chino Vera had two third-place finishes; in the 100 back (1:00.80) and 50 free (24.84).
Tyler Blackwell was third in the 100 fly in 100:84 and joined with Vera,
Chase Lane and
Dalton Cosner to finish the 200 medley relay in 1:48.64 for third place. Doyle, Cosner, Sheehan and Vera were second in the 400 free relay in 3:38.08.
The Keydets host Howard University Saturday, November 6 at 1 p.m. in Clark King Pool.
